Authorities ID Man Who Died In Anoka Fire

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities have identified the man who died in an apartment fire in Anoka early Saturday morning.

The Anoka County Medical Examiner’s Office said 61-year-old John Pebworth died in the fire, which sparked in his room in an apartment complex located on the 3000 block 6th Avenue North.

Authorities said foul play doesn’t appear to have contributed to Pebworth’s death, although the exact cause of the fire is still unknown.

Crews responded to the fire around 4:15 a.m. When they arrived at the complex, they evacuated the building, but they could not get into Pebworth’s apartment due to the heavy smoke and fire.

The fire is still under investigation.

my daughter Whitney kearns was the the first one to make the 911 call and knocked on everyones doors, she also was the one who broke the window of johns apartment to try to help him all before police/fire got there. This has been very hard for her has she knew john and thought he was a sweet man. If you are related to him please respond so my daughter can connect with his family. I am so very sorry for your loss😦

it makes me mad that this station has the story wrong… the fire department did not evacuate this building my daughter did and she should be able to take the credit. she is a hero in my eyes!! She broke the window trying to help john but the smoke was too heavy and she also had her 1 year old with her. This has been very tough on her she has been having terrible dreams and cant stop thinking about what happened that morning and the fact a life of a precious kind man was taken. John was very sweet to my daughter whois a young single mom! RIP John!!
