BLUE EARTH, Minn. (WCCO) – One person died and another is in the hospital with severe burns after a house fire Wednesday night in Blue Earth, according to the Faribault County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities responded to a report of a house fire at about 7:47 p.m. Wednesday on the 500 block of East 21st Street in Blue Earth. When authorities arrived, a 57-year-old couple who lived there were the only two people inside.

Dennis Paul Spencer made it out of the house on his own, but Susan Jean Domek was found by Blue Earth Fire Department officials on the floor in a back bedroom and unresponsive. Domek was taken out of the house and both were transported by ambulance to United Hospital of Blue Earth.

Domek died as a result of injuries sustained in the fire. Spencer was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center with severe burns to his body, mostly on his upper torso.

Authorities learned during an investigation of the fire that it may have been caused by a wood stove in the basement of the house.
