Patrol: Friday Snow Caused 682 Crashes Statewide

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Another round of snow fell on a morning rush hour, making for some major traffic headaches.

MnDOT cameras showed crashes and spinouts throughout the metro Friday morning, including a stretch of Interstate 94 wholly blocked off by a jackknifed semi truck near County Road 81 in Brooklyn Park.

The State Patrol reported there were 682 crashes Friday statewide, with 85 reporting injuries. The metro area alone had 577 crashes reported between 5 a.m. and 4 p.m., with 72 reporting injuries. In addition to that, 181 vehicles went off the road or were involved in spinouts statewide. There 120 vehicles that went off the road or spun out in the metro.

The slipping and sliding serve as a reminder to slow down and plan that you will spend a little extra time on the roads during the morning commute.

WCCO Meteorologist Matt Brickman said light snow was expected throughout the morning, but the heavy snow will stay to the southern parts of the state. Brickman said there is a winter weather advisory in effect in the southern Minnesota until 6 p.m. with 4-6 inches expected.

The heaviest snow will fall in the Twin Cities between 9 a.m. and noon. It won't taper off until 3 p.m. Snow totals in the metro area will be between 1-3 inches.

From St. Cloud and up north they can expect 0-1 inches.

Temperatures will be better than Thursday, hovering in the single-digits. The Twins Cities will likely drop below zero overnight again.

Brickman said people can expect another round of snow on Sunday.
