Minn. Aid Agency Talks Famine Prevention

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minnesota-based aid agency is hosting an event to talk about strategies for ending the cycle of famine in East Africa.

The American Relief Agency for the Horn of Africa says the forum will feature presentations from ARAHA staff members who have been to Mogadishu, Somalia. It will also include a panel discussion about ways to break the cycle of famine there.

A famine was declared in Somalia six months ago. It's estimated to have killed between 50,000 to 100,000 people.

ARAHA executive director Mohamed Idris says he believes Somalia's famine was preventable, and proactive measure must be taken to create a sustainable future for the Horn of Africa.

ARAHA's forum will run from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Hubert H. Humphrey School for Public Affairs.
