Minn. Senate Committee Discusses Voter ID
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- A Senate committee is taking up a proposed constitutional amendment that would require voters to show photo IDs.
Gov. Mark Dayton vetoed voter ID legislation last May, so Senate Republicans are hoping an amendment is the pathway for voter ID. If approved by both chambers, it would appear on the November ballot.
Republicans argue that the amendment will stop voter fraud. Democrats say requiring photo ID would disenfranchise many voters, including students, minorities and the elderly.
Among the groups scheduled to testify against the amendent were AARP, the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits and the League of Women Voters.
