Childproofing your home—inside and out—is one of the most significant steps you can take in keeping your children safe. Of all the unintentional injury deaths reported each year, about 45 percent happen in and around the home, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

When childproofing your home, it’s important to make sure all areas of the home have been properly inspected for potential safety hazards. Serious and life-threatening injuries, such as burns, drowning, falls, suffocation, choking and poisoning, can result from a number of unsuspected situations.

Because the average homeowner may not be aware of all safety hazards, many are increasingly turning to professionals who are trained in properly childproofing homes. A certified childproofer should be able to provide installation services after identifying areas in the home that could present hazards.

Here are five tips to help you identify an experienced childproofer:

  1. Is the provider willing to offer you comprehensive services, from installation services to educational tips for you and your family?
  2. Is the professional thoroughly discussing potential hazards throughout the home and outside the home, including windows, outdoor pools, stairs, bookcases, electrical systems, appliances and exercise equipment?
  3. Does the provider seem aware of the latest safety hazards and safety solutions?
  4. Does the professional seem to have access to more sophisticated products not readily available at your local stores?
  5. Does the professional seem to be prepared to address peculiarities to your home, such as lofts, bay windows, etc.?
