Sick Of Cold? Try These Winter Boredom Busters

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Winter has been dragging on for a couple of months now. If you're a parent, you may be running short things for your kids to do inside.

There are fun and creative activities for kids to do inside during the winter. Employees at Twin Cities toy store chain, Creative Kidstuff, suggest hosting a "Crafternoon."

"A big trend is duct tape," said Happi Olson a manager with Creative Kidstuff. "You can make anything out of duct tape."

Duct tape has evolved from a handyman's best friend to a colorful and patterned art supply.

If you have family photos lying around the house, Smash Booking can be a fun way to have kids put the pictures in a DIY scrapbook. Smash Book comes with a pen with a glue stick on the end to stick the pictures to colorful and artistic layouts in a spiral-bound book.

Mod Podge has been around for decades, and Olson said the artistic paste is making a comeback.

"It's a special glue you can use to shellac things to a surface," said Olson.

Cutouts from magazines and newspapers can be glued to boxes with Mod Podge to turn bland pieces of cardboard into something fun and decorative.

Another idea for parents and their kids is to plan an inside camp-out. Olson suggests pitching a tent indoors with traditional camping food.

"No camp-out would be complete without S'mores," said Olson.

If you're looking to get out of the house, there's a free toddler playtime at the West End Creative Kidstuff every Wednesday from 10 to 11 am.

Another idea is to encourage kids bring their old toys to a thrift store, local crisis center, or a local child care center. Someone else may still be able to have fun with them and giving them away should clear up some space in the house.
