BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (WCCO) — Taking the plunge, way up in the air — that’s what some couples have decided to do on this Valentine’s Day.

The couples were married on the giant Ferris Wheel at Mall of America on Tuesday. The ceremony was at 8:30 a.m. and each couple sat in a different gondola.

They were picked through a contest, in which they had to submit their engagement story.

Along with the wedding, they each received a two-night stay at the Crown Plaza Bloomington, as well as dinner.

The couple with the best overall engagement story also won a $200 gift card.

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, the Mall of America is offering free Ferris Wheel rides all day.

Editor’s note: Mall of America spokesperson Bridget Jewell said while 12 couples were expected, only five came to tie the knot Tuesday. She said they usually expect one or two no-shows with an event like this.

I’m not sure why straight couples are so up in arms about gay marriage. They have pretty much devalued the institution to the point it is pretty much meaningless anyway. Let’s have marriage between dogs and cats! The cutest couple can then win a prize to go to Disneyland and ride all of the neat thrill rides!

I wouldn’t want to make a bet on how long these “marriages” last.

    1. I disagree says:

It’s not “straight couples” that are upset about gay marriage. It’s closed minded bigots. I don’t care who gets married or how. Gay, straight, on a ferris wheel, in church. You can’t “devalue” something that has a different and personal meaning to everyone else. Some cultures marry children as young as 9 and have a harem of wives at their disposal. That doesn’t make my marriage any less meaningful.

Youre right. We need more open mindedness. I want to marry my dog so that I can get health benefits for her and her puppies. I also want to 3 wives (and I want one of them to be 14), don’t tell me I can’t you close minded a-holes, and my gay-brother wants to marry my gay first-cousin. I mean hey, why not? I mean if your open-minded…

Why do anti-gay marriage people always mention marrying their pets? It’s that’s the first thing you think of then you have bigger problems than what your neighbors do.

Get married on a Ferris wheel? Really…come on! Seems unromantic in my view.
And on Valentines day?!?! Sorry but I don’t think they thought it through…. Maybe they just want their 5 minute fame being on the news.

    1. me says:

Romantic is different in each persons eyes. What you find Romantic, maybe I do not..after all the ole flowers and walks on a sunset beach etc…is a bit old these days…time to come up with something different.

  3. jackactionhero says:

Ahh yes. The sanctity of marriage reaffirmed…

  4. sam says:

hey, if that’s what they wanted to do, so be it. so maybe they don’t have the money for a big white wedding, what better way to have some of the expense picked up? a copule of nights in the hotel and a story to tell their children some day. get over it.

Seems fitting since life can be one heck of an emotional roller coaster. 😀

Marriage; Legally and financially binding yourself to another person based on your emotions. First marriage around 50% failure and second marriages approaching 70%. Happy Valentine Day.

    1. FreddyMac says:

Which is not a reflection on marriage, but a reflection on the societies lost moral. Marriage is inert, it has no choice, no feeling, no common sense.

  7. Ace says:

I think it’s really cool to get married on a ferris wheel, why not? More power to them and I hope for happiness to them all on their special day.

  8. Yepppp says:

I hope they get divorced on the tilt-owhirl

neioodsmosttcated September 20, 2011 I love this! Thank you so much for taking the time to write such an amazing comment, Katie. And it’s so true our marriage is our greatest ministry, which is also why Satan always seeks to attack it! We need to stay strong in the Word and protect our marriages, which you and your husband are obviously working to do!! Can’t wait to check out your blog!
