Utility Worker Trapped In Car Amid Power Lines

LAKELAND, Minn. (WCCO) -- A scary and potentially deadly situation was avoided after a boom truck got tangled up in some live power lines Wednesday morning.

Firefighters said the truck had just left a job site when the boom started rising on its own and hit the power lines in Lakeland. The truck was lifted seven to 10 feet off the ground.

The crew stayed in its truck and called for assistance due to the fear of possible electrocution.

"You have to consider all power wires energized until ruled out by a professional so they did the right thing by remaining in the vehicle," said Deputy Chief Jim Stanly with the Lower St. Croix Fire Department.

Officials with Xcel Energy came and cut the lines. It knocked out power and disconnected landlines in that neighborhood for a short time.

Authorities said there were no injuries in the incident.
