ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A Republican state senator says she’ll run for Congress against Democrat Collin Peterson.
Sen. Gretchen Hoffman of Vergas says Friday she’ll run against Peterson in Minnesota’s 7th Congressional District. The district covers a large portion of western and northwestern Minnesota and includes the cities of Moorhead, Crookston, Fergus Falls, Alexandria, Marshall and Willmar.
Hoffman was elected to the state Senate in 2010 but redistricting put her in the same Senate district as a fellow Republican senator.
Another Republican, Lee Byberg, is also seeking the GOP endorsement. He lost to Peterson in 2010.
Hoffman says in a press release that she will give Peterson “his toughest challenge to date.” Peterson was first elected in 1990 and said earlier this week that he is running for reelection.
