Regents Panel To Meet On Sviggum Dual Jobs

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A panel of the University of Minnesota Board of Regents will meet Friday to determine whether Regent Steve Sviggum has a conflict of interest.

Sviggum started a new job five weeks ago a chief spokesman for Minnesota Senate Republicans at the Capitol. That prompted Regents Chairwoman Linda Cohen to seek two legal opinions on whether Sviggum has a conflict of interest.

The opinions from university legal counsel and an independent attorney are expected to be released Wednesday morning. A three-member Regents panel meets Friday at the McNamara Alumni Center to discuss whether Sviggum has a conflict and to make recommendations to the full Board of Regents.

Sviggum, a former Minnesota House speaker, contends he does not have a conflict because he's not a decision-maker at the Capitol.
