MN Muslims Protest Senate Bill, Claim Discrimination

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The Minnesota Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, along with interfaith leaders, are standing together against a Senate bill they say discriminates against them.

Munazza Humayun, civil rights coordinator for CAIR, says the new “anti-Sharia” bill threatens religious freedom. She says it was written using a template provided by an anti-Islam extremist.

“We are here today to send a clear message that intolerance and a restriction on religious freedom is not a Minnesota value.” Humayun said.

Humayun said the language of the bill was crafted by David Yerushalmi. She says Yerushalmi is an anti-Islamic extremist who has in the past taken the position to outlaw the practice of Islam in the U.S.

“In addition, David Yerushalmi has made anti-women, anti-Jewish, anti-African American statements in the past and we are disappointed that a Minnesota legislator is sponsoring a bill,” she said.

Humayun said Sharia requires Muslims to obey the law of the land, and she said the bill serves no purpose.

“We challenge the proponents of this bill to cite just one example where anyone’s rights have been adversely impacted by the application of foreign law in any Minnesota court or administrative body,” she said.

NewsRadio 830 WCCO’s Susie Jones Reports

Sharia is a path that guides the life of Muslims in their practices. U.S. courts are regularly required to interpret foreign law, including Islamic law.

Iman Makram Elamin said this can include foreign divorces, custody decrees, marriage certificates, Islamic wills, or enforcement of money judgments.

“America has a well-established tradition of allowing religious leaders to mediate disputes so long as the agreements comply with U.S. law. This applies to the Catholic Canon law, Jewish Halakhah, and Islamic Sharia,” he said.

Rabbi Amy Eilberg said the legislative is fear-based.

“There is no, zero possibility that Sharia or Halakha or Catholic Canon law could be a serious threat to America,” she said.

Before the bill was even introduced, the author, Republican Dave Thompson pulled it.

“It was never my intent to introduce legislation that was being targeted to any one group,” said Thompson.

Muslim groups still say there are similar, unconstitutional anti-Sharia bills that have been introduced in more than 20 states.

    Do we care?

Send ’em all back from whence they came.

    • Troll Hunter

You mean the Rabbi that is protesting this law too? or just the Muslims?

  • babybluebiker

I agree boo hoo. If one wants to live in the USA, they need to live by our rules. We do NOT have to cater to them.We owe them nothing.

    • duh

Nevermind…you guys??? You must be writing from another continent since you are referring to others refusing to live by rules in place when they came to North America thus excluding yourself. How is Africa this time of year?

    • sjdrgr

“You guys” ?? Wow, no racism there. Sharia is a growing threat. Look at Europe.

    • Random

No because religion is the definition of evil. Get a clue.

    • Brett

If you don’t like OUR LAWS, you are FREE to go BACK to whatever dirty, filty, lawless country you came from. Don’t come HERE and tell me what is wrong with MY COUNTRY, and pretend that you are “better”.

  • Navaho Joe

“It was never my intent to introduce legislation that was being targeted to any one group,” said Thompson.

Bull Hockey! (to quote the late Col Sherman T. Potter from M*A*S*H)

You just didn’t think this would turn into a story let alone get prominent religious figures from other religions to come out against it.

Got caught with your pants down….

  • J

The consitution is all we need, equal rights for all. This is a slippery slope. If you allow for one religion, you have to allow for all. For example, honor killings? The church of 420? Pologamy? Satanic sacrifice? We need to think about the long term consequences of this.

Richard is right on the money!!!

  • ...Athiest

Give me a break… Sharia law? That goes against the constitution and stops at the shores of the US as being an actual..”law”. If they’re upset that they can exact “their” law in another country with an already present judicial system ..then tough. I find ALL religious ideologies absolute rubbish and a breeding ground for ignorance.

Who says we are not citizens? I was born in this country centuries ago, and classify myself a good American. Why must the world be so intolerant of different views and opinions? This is a test, and guess who will lose…..all of us!

  • Michele

Um, Richard? Muslims have resided in this country since the beginning. And Muslims have lived in Minnesota since before it was a state. As to religions taking over, see Christianity and the HISTORY OF THE WESTERN WORLD.

    • Corey

Is this Michele “Bachmann” with all this inaccurate history?

    • kevin

Dear Michelle, Christians were the ones that stood by seperation of Church and state which means that there are NO LAWS that pertain to religion in government. People are free to practice their religion, Islam, Wicca or whatever. Sharia means special laws that give Muslims special rights which are particularly agregious to people of other stripes, Christians, athiests Hindus or whatever. Islam is at war with any and every other culturew in the world where it resides in close proximity. Islam is the most intollerant of religions. Ask the animast people in Southern Sudan about their Muslim neighbors, ask the Budist Thais about the Muslims in Thailand. Sharia is about the slow and gradual takeover of our country which is the goal of Islam.

      • Michele

Actually, kevin, Christians weren’t the only people who defined this country’s laws. Nobody is saying that Sharia law should be practiced in this country. But don’t people have the right to reject military service because of their religious beliefs? Don’t religious beliefs have a place in the consideration of a person’s case?

Hey, I’m female. While Mohammed liked women, too many people have used his words to warp the religion. Big surprise, you see that in Christianity all the time. And kevin, I’ve heard SO many Christians believe that they have to take over the world.

All I’m saying is, don’t judge an entire people because of their faith. There are jerks and there are good people I’ve met a LOT of good people of the Muslim faith. You’re cutting yourself off from people you might like, by fearing a whole religion.

      • Michele

kevin, when you’re in court, what do you swear by?

        • Michele

I rescind that statement. I’ve been told that it’s no longer swearing on the bible.

Obey the “Law of the Land”??? Who woulda thunk that one up? Does that mean that any one of us can “snap” at any time, due to their religious preferences, do whatever “they” think is “right”? What dark road does that lead us down to?

Anyone who actually fears sharia law becoming an actuality in this country is an idiot.

And all republicans who continue to push these laws are fear mongering puppet masters riling up their sheeple.

The rules Muslims follow within their religion and within their Mosques have no bearing on the society as a whole. Just like rules followed within Catholic churches or Jewish temples, or within any other religion.

    • a theist

Not completely true. Banking, Courts, Places of employment, Schools, for example are all prescribed to change and submit.

For example, a home loan with no interest. No dividends on investments, even their own court system as they have in England. We have to change the way we do business.

On PBS I listened to a Muslim who stated that Sharia is about living under a contract, US laws for example, which can be changed over time. “We will change what we can” is what he said.

Unlike other religions, Islam is not just held in a Mosque, but extends itself into society which does have a bearing, without compromise.

When mocking Allah and Muhammad become illegal, we will have arrived. This week a judge ruled that the atheist who marched as a Muhammad zombie, next to a Christ zombie, was rightfully attacked for mocking the so called prophet. Think about that. Assault and battery is ok, free speech is not.

      • Richard

Cite the case, and note that the decision as you describe it won’t pass the tests applied in higher courts (to protect the right of free expression, including the right
        to satirize religion).

    • Pusporaj

Those who have read many of my posts and articles here know that I bveeile Christianity and all other religions to be in gross error. I do not single out Muslims or their ways. Sharia law contains many faults because, in essence, it is only man’s law. It does not even depend as wholly on the revealed will of God as Moses’ Law and history has shown us that dependence even upon Moses’ Law leads mankind to murder the very Son of God. No solution exists in man’s law. Only the Kingdom of God can heal mankind, a kingdom wherein the Law of Moses kisses the mercy of Christ, the unity of mercy and truth.

Minnesota has a law which prohibits the sale of alcohol in liquor stores on Sundays. Why Sundays instead of Tuesdays? Was the law informed by laws in Western Europe, or by laws in the Middle East?

Would Rep. Dave Thompson write a bill allowing liquor and car sales on Sunday?
