12-Year-Old To Represent Minnesota In Nat'l Spelling Bee

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Twelve-year-old Elise Stahl from Greenfield, Minn., is studying hard, because she'll be representing her state at the national spelling bee in Washington, D.C.

"I think it will be really fun," Stahl said.

Elise won the Twin Cities-area regional spelling bee last Saturday in St. Paul. The competition took over five hours, and she beat more than 45 other students by correctly spelling the word remand.

"It was really nerve racking," Stahl said. "I actually didn't know that the winner would go on to D.C. I thought that there was another spelling bee after for the winner."

The home-schooled Stahl will now represent Minnesota at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May. She says it's a lot of pressure.

Elise is in seventh grade and has been competing since the fifth grade.

"We are very, very proud of her," said Mary Stahl, Elise's mother. "She studied really hard this past year. She's been in the spelling bee the last couple of years, but we worked harder this year to get there … She really earned it."
