20-Year-Old Charged In Deadly Cass Co. Stabbing

ONIGUM, Minn. (WCCO) — A 20-year-old man has been charged with allegedly stabbing a 22-year-old Walker man to death Wednesday night.

Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch said police responded the stabbing around 10:15 p.m. in the Onigum area. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim, who died while en route to the hospital, suffering from stab wounds.

According to the criminal complaint, Sheldon Smith stabbed the victim during an encounter between two groups of individuals, and then fled the scene with companions.

Police arrested Smith that night. He is now charged with second-degree murder.

The stabbing is still under investigation.

The victim’s identity is being withheld until his family is notified.

Smith’s bail has been set at $750,000 without conditions and $500,000 with conditions.

    I guess cass county isn’t investigating very well if they are only charging him with 2nd degree murder. This crime was planned. A few hours before it took place the killer was at the basketball courts talking about doing it. He was carrying the knife and looking for the victim, HELLOOOOOOO! Cass county has a habit of not charging murderers correctly. Maybe they need a new D.A. I wonder what the charge would be if they had murdered a young unarmed man in town?

    1st of all, they need to provide evidence (proof) that he had planned to do it. Someone, like you, needs to come forward and say what you are saying and stand by it with proof.
