MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 32-year-old South St. Paul man was sentenced to more than six years in prison Friday in Washington County Court after admitting to breaking a 6-month-old boy’s ribs last August.
Mark James Nelson pleaded guilty to first-degree assault on Jan. 12. According to the charge, Nelson was dating the mother of the baby when he became angry with her on Aug. 19, 2011. Nelson then picked up the baby and squeezed him in the torso area until he heard cracking noises.
Medical personnel examined the baby and determined that he had 37 separate fractures and had broken 22 of 24 ribs. The boy had also suffered bruising to his liver and lungs.
