Koenen Advances In Western Minn. Senate Primary

WILLMAR, Minn. (AP) — Democrats in a handful of western Minnesota counties have chosen a candidate for a special election next month to fill an open state Senate seat.

In unofficial returns from Tuesday's primary, state Rep. Lyle Koenen of Clara City advances to the April 10 special election to replace state Sen. Gary Kubly.

The Granite Falls DFLer died earlier this month from complications of Lou Gehrig's disease. Koenen beat John Schultz with about 66 percent of votes.

Republican Gregg Kulberg and the Independence Party's Leon Greenslit were unopposed in the primary.

The district includes parts of Big Stone, Chippewa, Lac qui Parle, Lincoln, Renville, Swift and Yellow Medicine counties.
