Esme's Blog: Wis. Voters Gone Wild

Gov.Scott Walker was elected just over a year ago, and now he could be just the third sitting governor in the history of the U.S. to be thrown out of office in the middle of his term.

(The others who got the boot were Gov. Gray Davis of California in 2003 and Lynn Frazier of North Dakota in 1921).

Wisconsin's rocky road the past 14 months makes Minnesota's or any other states political squabbles look like nursery school dust ups. The most impressive thing about the recall is the timeline. The primary is May 8, the election is June 5. The least impressive aspect is that it seeks to invalidate the results of a legitimately won election victory by Gov. Walker and Republicans in the Wisconsin House and Senate.

What if Wisconsin residents don't like the results of the recall? Then what? A recall of the recall?

Maybe the 900,000 who signed the petitions for a recall didn't vote in 2010. Maybe they just came to the realization that elections, especially at the state level, really matter and have the potential to profoundly shape issues that affect all of our lives.
