Charges: Columbia Heights Man Stabbed Ex-Girlfriend 12 Times

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Columbia Heights man faces charges of assault and attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend 12 times while her 2-year-old child lay next to her.

The Anoka County Attorney's Office charged 39-year-old Antonio Robinson with one count of second-degree attempted murder and one count of first-degree assault, according to documents filed Friday. If convicted of both crimes, Robinson looks to face a maximum of 40 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $30,000.

A criminal complaint paints this picture of the assault. On Feb. 19, police responded to a call of a stabbing at a Tyler Street home. When police arrived at the scene, they found a woman pointing to the victim, who was covered in blood and had a gash running from her forehead, over her eyelid and down to her jaw.

Crews immediately took the victim to the Hennepin County Medical Center to be treated. While on the way, the victim told authorities that Robinson hurt her.

Meanwhile, police learned that Robinson had fled the scene. However, witnesses were able to give police a description of Robinson, and police gave chase. Police eventually found Robinson, whose clothes appeared to be covered in blood.

The victim's children told police that their mother ran out of her bedroom, saying she'd been stabbed. After her, Robinson followed with a large kitchen knife.

While in the hospital, the victim told police that before the stabbing she had just broken up with Robinson and had asked him to leave the house. At this point, the victim's 2-year-old child entered the bedroom with a bottle. The child climbed up on the bed with the victim. Meanwhile, Robinson kept asking about the status of their relationship. At some point, Robinson stopped asking and said, "OK, watch this." He then stabbed the victim with what was described as a large kitchen knife.

The victim also told authorities she fought back and kicked before running out the room.

When arrested, Robinson told police that the victim was nagging him and that she had the knife. Robinson said that he and the victim were poking each other with knifes. However, Robinson did not appear to have suffered any wounds, police said.

Robinson told police he only wanted to scare the victim.

Police said that when the criminal complaint was written, the victim was still in the hospital. Doctors are concerned about the long-term consequences that may result from the cut on her eye.
