MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota has connections to two winners of Pulitzer Prizes for the arts.

Tracy K. Smith won the poetry prize Monday for “Life on Mars,” published by Minneapolis-based Graywolf Press.

The music award went to Kevin Puts’ “Silent Night: Opera in Two Acts.” The Minnesota Opera commissioned Puts’ debut opera and premiered it on Nov. 12, 2011.

The opera tells the true story of a cease-fire among Scottish, French and Germans during World War I.
