Tech Minute: Time To Ditch That Old Computer?

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Let's face it, computers don't last forever. But how do you know when it's time to ditch your old computer for something new?

Geek Squad agents take these types of questions all the time from customers at Best Buy.

"A lot of times you can base the need to upgrade versus the need to repair based on the age of the system," said Geek Squad agent Joey Diaz.

Just how long should laptops last these days? Diaz says you should expect them to last three to five years. However, desktop computers can last longer because they are more easily upgraded.

Over time, new software increases demand of the hardware should also keep pace.

When deciding on replacing or upgrading your computer, Diaz uses the "rule of three."

"If you have to do more than three different hardware upgrades or spend more than $300 on the system, it might be time to invest that money in something new," he said.
