Minnesota Soldier Killed In Afghanistan

ROCHESTER, Minn. (WCCO) -- A Minnesota soldier from the Rochester area was killed in Afghanistan, according to family members.

The mother of Nicholas Dickhut confirmed that her 23-year-old son had been killed during his first tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Dickhut's mother, Jacqueline Carson, said her son had just called home on Sunday to wish his younger brother a happy birthday. He said he was about to go on a mission.

Carson said they are still not sure how he was killed.

Dickhut was a member of the 520th Infantry Regiment, attached to the 82nd Airborne Division. He had served a partial tour of duty in Iraq before going to Afghanistan in December.

He graduated from Stewartville High School.

Dickhut had just been featured in a Reuters photo essay detailing the 82nd Airborne Division's tour in Afghanistan.
