MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Cooper High School student died Thursday while playing basketball at a YMCA in New Hope, according to officials with the Robbinsdale School District.

Kalonyea Wopea, a junior at the school, collapsed Thursday while playing basketball at the Northwest YMCA in New Hope. Emergency personnel tried attempts to revive him, but they were not successful.

School district officials sent out a note to students and parents about the incident Friday morning and said grief counselors have been at Cooper High School all day to provide support.

It was also a reminder to stay safe during the high school prom season. Cooper High School’s prom is this weekend.

Wopea’s exact cause of death is not known at this time.

The school district is putting together efforts to help Wopea’s family in this time of tragedy. Anyone interested in helping the family is asked to contact Lee Meyer at &763) 504-8507.
