Police Identify Officers In Mpls Officer-Involved Shooting

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Police identified Monday the officers involved in the fatal shooting of a man who allegedly wielded a knife at a Minneapolis apartment complex over the weekend.

Police said officers Laura Turner and Chad Meyer shot the man, identified by family as Del Shawn Crawford, Sr.

The shooting happened shortly after 2:15 a.m. Saturday at an apartment building on the 3000 block of 19th Avenue South. Four officers responded to the apartment complex due to a domestic abuse call. Police said when they got there they heard screams and had to force their way inside.

Once inside, police say the officers were immediately confronted by Crawford, who approached them with a knife. When he did not put down the knife, police said the officers "were forced" to shoot and kill Crawford.

Turner joined Minneapolis police in 1997 and is a veteran of the United States Army Reserve. She won the Medal of Commendation in 2004, police said.

Meyer joined Minneapolis police in 2008. He has received the Medal of Valor and the Medal of Commendation. He was also nominated for Officer of the Year in 2009.

Both officers are on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure, while the homicide and internal affairs units continue their investigations.
