MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The future remains uncertain for hundreds of Minnesotans who work at the Verso Paper Mill in Sartell.
An explosion at the mill on Memorial Day killed one worker and injured four others. Now as the company decides whether to reopen, most of the plant’s employees have been sent layoff notices.
Before the blast, the mill employed more than 250 people. A spokesperson told the St. Cloud Times only a fraction of the staff remains at the facility.
Verso officials say the plant will likely remain idle into the fall. Much of the warehouse where the fire happened has been torn down. Fire investigators still haven’t figured out what caused the explosion.
