Officials: Gusty Storms Leave Some Campgrounds Closed

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The gusty storms that tore through northern Minnesota Monday night have left some campgrounds closed until further notice, according to state officials.

Officials said winds toppled trees, which blocked roads and shut off power to much of the northern/central part of the state. The roads to Chippewa National Forest Campgrounds at Norway Beach and Pike Lake were blocked by downed trees. No one was injured at these locations, but campers were isolated until crews could clear the roads.

Officials said the roads were open by noon. The campgrounds, however, remain closed until further notice.

The campground on the west side of Lake Winnie as well as Cass Lake Campgrounds and the Migizi bicycle trail are also closed due to the storms. Officials warn that those planning to explore the campgrounds over the holiday could experience blowdown on forest roads and trials.

It will take several days before trees and brush can be cleared from the campgrounds.
