U.S. Labor Dept. Visits MN, Addresses Homeless Veterans Problem

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The U.S. Secretary of Labor was in the Twin Cities Friday to address the problem of homeless veterans.

Secretary Hilda Solis toured the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. The Labor Department recently awarded more than $15 million in grants to provide 8,600 homeless veterans nationwide with job training for civilian careers.

Solis says it's important to provide veterans a sense of empowerment so that they can find a good job.

"We know people are going to need this kind of assistance," she said.

The Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans received $300,000 in grants for the Twin Cities area and $120,000 to provide services in greater Minnesota.
