MPCA Sets Meeting On Minneapolis Metal Shredder

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency will hold a public meeting on a proposal by a Minneapolis scrap metal recycling company that wants looser rules.

Northern Metals LLC has been fighting for significant changes to its air emission permit. The MPCA has prepared an environmental assessment worksheet that will be the subject of the meeting starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Minneapolis Park Board headquarters. Citizens can comment following a presentation by MPCA staff, and the MPCA will accept public comments until Sept. 10.

The metal-shredder is on the Mississippi River in an industrial part of north Minneapolis. The company is seeking looser restrictions on its operations.  But critics are concerned about levels of mercury and heavy metals that could come with shredding old cars. They want stricter controls.
