Mall Of America Celebrates 20-Year Anniversary This Weekend

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (WCCO) -- If you like cake, maybe you'll want to plan a trip to Mall of America this weekend.

That's because the nation's most visited mall is celebrating a milestone anniversary, what they're calling "20 years of fun," and they'll have a cake worthy of the occasion.

The Mall of American opened on Aug. 11, 1992, and is celebrating its 20th anniversary this weekend. It was built on the site of the former Met Stadium in Bloomington.

Since then, it has become the number one shopping center in America, drawing 40 million visitors each year. That's more than the combined populations of North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and all of Canada.

To celebrate, Buddy Valastro, who's famous from his TLC show "Cake Boss" has made an eight foot by four foot cake. This is video of him making a previous cake with a Dr. Seuss theme. The mall cake will depict Nickelodeon Universe, the LEGO store, Moose Mountain Golf Course and more.

It took more than 50 pounds of flour, 450 eggs, and seven people four days to make. Theoretically, it could feed up to 2,000 people. It'll be on display in the mall rotunda on Saturday starting at 11 a.m, and they'll start serving at about 2 p.m.

Here's a list of the events this weekend at the Mall of America.

Friday is also the last day to enter the Mall of America's 20 Days of Giveaways, click here to enter.
