MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – When the Minnesota State Fair gets underway in 10 days, the new Princess Kay of the Milky Way will spend the first few hours of her reign in a cooler, getting her head carved in butter.
So what happens to those sculptures after the fair?
This year’s Princess Kay, Mary Zahurones, has invited everyone to a corn feed at the family farm in Pierz, where her butter head will be melted for corn-dipping. She says some previous Princess Kays have kept their heads.
“Some Princess Kays like to hold on to theirs — keep them in the freezer — and especially if they have younger siblings that aspire to become Princess Kay. Then they really like to keep their butter heads and have multiples in the freezer at a time,” said Zahurones.
This Princess Kay wanted to make sure her carving would be a good shape for the corn feed, so her grandmother has kept it in a freezer all year
“She’s been keeping it under tight security. She loves to host that butter head,” added Zahurones.
The Princess Kay of the Milky for 2012 will be crowned on August 22, the eve of this year’s State Fair.
