Apple Orchards Hitting Their Peak Season

WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. (WCCO) -- There are apple orchards around the Twin Cities that are recovering from a rough start to the season.

The trees bloomed early because of a warm spring, and then it got real cold.

Pine Tree Apple Orchard in White Bear Lake was one of the orchards that was spared from the harsh season. It all depends on which apple you are looking for to determine whether it's in peak season or if that has passed.

Officials at the White Bear Lake orchard say that the honey crisp, Minnesota's state apple, is in perfect peak condition right now and now is the time to pick them. Officials at the Pine Tree Apple Orchard said the apple crop doesn't have to be completely dependent on weather and that if you have a good site, you can survive the rollercoaster weather that comes to the state.

Orchard officials said they like their area because in White Bear Lake, they have three lakes and have plenty of moisture in the area to keep the crop fresh. Officials said right now honey crisp and Haralson are right in their peak.
