ROCKVILLE, Minn. (WCCO) — One man is dead and another was shot multiple times after an officer-involved shooting in Rockville.

Police spent the morning searching for a loose gunman, who allegedly shot one person inside a home.

The gunman was later found at an apartment nearby and shot by Stearns County Sheriff officers three times. The man was transported to St. Cloud Hospital, where he is still alive. His condition is not available.

Authorities say the gunman is 28-year-old Marcus Michael Barshaw, a white man with a shaved head and glasses.

Police say Barshaw shot 30-year-old Jeffery Schutz dead in front of two or three other people around 4 a.m. Sunday inside a Rockville apartment. Police say Barshaw was an acquaintance of the people in the home.

“As we get on the scene, we find a male individual, in the city of Rockville, in an alley who had been shot,” said John Sanner, the Stearns County Sheriff.

Barshaw then exited the rear if the apartment building, armed with a SKS-style scoped assault rifle and a small handgun on him at the time of the shooting.

“The officers surrounding the building give verbal commands for him to drop the weapon, that’s done repeatedly,” Sanner said. “He does not drop the weapon, in fact, he raises the weapon and at that time, law enforcement shoots him.”

Barshaw was wounded by gunfire, treated on scene and then taken to the St. Cloud Hospital. He is now in critical condition, according to the Associated Press.

Authorities blocked off portions of the town and had been advising people to stay in their homes. The town was under lockdown for about four hours Sunday morning.

“It’s a quiet town,” said Paul Cannon, a residents for three years. “People say hi to you on the street, they wave as you come by.”

The BCA is helping with the investigation.

The deputy involved in the shooting is a 6.5-year member of the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office and has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard in these situations.
