Gophers Receive Big 10 Awards After Victory

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Teams usually get honored after big wins in conference play, and the Gopher football team is no exception after its dominating 44-28 win over Purdue on Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium.

Senior cornerback Michael Carter and true freshman quarterback Philip Nelson were both honored by the Big 10 Conference after their performances in Saturday's win. It was their first win in conference play after starting the season 4-0 in the non-conference schedule.

Carter was selected the Co-Defensive Player of the Week after he tied a program record with six pass break-ups and returned an interception 43 yards for a touchdown. Carter also had six tackles in the victory.

Nelson helped lead the Gophers offensively to a win in his first career home start. He passed for 246 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half. At one point, Nelson completed 11 straight passes. Minnesota had seven straight scoring drives in the victory.
