ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A painting of a walleye chasing a minnow will be featured on Minnesota’s 2013 walleye stamp.
The Department of Natural Resources says a team of judges picked Nicholas Markell’s design from among nine entries.
This is the second win for Markell in just over a year in a DNR-sponsored stamp contest. The Hugo man also won the 2012 trout stamp contest. Markell has been a finalist many times, finishing third in last year’s walleye and turkey stamp contests.
An artist whose work is selected for a Minnesota fish or wildlife stamp receives no compensation from the DNR, but retains reproduction and marketing rights.
The Legislature created the optional walleye stamp in 2009. It adds $5 to the cost of an angling license. The revenues help fund walleye stocking programs.
