SHOREVIEW, Minn. (WCCO) – Authorities are investigating after a pedestrian was hit by a car and killed Monday night near Vadnais Lake.

Authorities said the accident happened at about 7:40 p.m. Monday on the 3700 block of Rice Street in Shoreview. When authorities arrived, a 24-year-old man was found unconscious and breathing. He was treated by paramedics at the scene and transported to Regions Hospital.

The Minnesota State Patrol said Ryan Earl Esslinger of St. Paul was riding a skateboard on the Rice Street north of Interstate 694 along a wooded area on the western edge of Vadnais Lake. He was struck by a vehicle traveling on the northbound lane.

He was treated and taken to Regions Hospital, where he died at about 9 p.m., authorities said.

The driver of the car, a 21-year-old, called 911 immediately and fully cooperated with authorities. She was wearing her seat belt and was not under the influence of alcohol, authorities said.

The Minnesota State Patrol and the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office are investigating what led up to the accident.
