MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — It’s not your parents’ pickled herring. Organizers say it’s not even close.

Minnesota Sea Grant is holding its second-annual Salute to Lake Superior’s Sustainable Fisheries at the University of Minnesota McNamra Alumni Center in Minneapolis on Tuesday.

The 10-chef cook-off features one fish — lake herring, also known as ciscoes or tullibee. They’re in the same family as trout and salmon, while pickled herring come from ocean herring, which are in the same family as sardines.

The chefs will be competing for a $1,000 prize. Guests who fork out $20 for a ticket get the opportunity to sample the recipes.

Lake herring were once considered at great risk, but Lake Superior’s commercial fishermen and fisheries managers have worked to rejuvenate the species.
