Mahnomen Tops Bethlehem Academy For Class 1A Title
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jacob Pavek ran for two scores and threw for one as Mahnomen held off Bethlehem Academy 20-14 for the Class 1A championship Saturday at the Prep Bowl.
Pavek led Mahnomen (14-0) with 151 rushing yards. The title is Mahnomen's seventh overall.
Kyle Filzen passed for one touchdown and rushed for another for Bethlehem Academy (11-3), a private school in Faribault.
Down by a touchdown, Bethlehem Academy's Tim Angell intercepted Pavek in the end zone with just over 7 minutes to play, but the Mahnomen defense forced a three-and-out.
Pavek and Nathan Hanson connected on a 23-yard touchdown with about 2 minutes to play for a 20-7 lead, but Filzen found Angell for a 15-yard touchdown with 34 seconds to play to get within 20-14. However, Mahnomen recovered the onside kick.
