COLD SPRING, Minn. (WCCO) – A police officer died overnight after being shot while on a welfare check in an apartment above a bar in Cold Spring, Minn., authorities say.
The Cold Spring Police Department confirmed there was an active shooting in the town, located southwest of St. Cloud, just minutes after midnight. Authorities closed Cold Spring’s downtown streets and a helicopter flew overhead as officers from multiple departments searched for the suspect, the St. Cloud Times reports.
Not long after the shooting, a SWAT team found the suspect in his apartment, the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office said. Authorities took him into custody and interviewed him. He has not been named.
The name of the officer killed has also not been given.
No more information is expected on the shooting until later Friday morning.
