Dozens Of Horses Removed From Fillmore Co. Property

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. (WCCO) – Fifty-five horses, ponies and donkeys were removed from a property in southeastern Minnesota this week by the Animal Humane Society (AHS).

According to AHS Senior Humane Agent Keith Streff, authorities were alerted to the property in Fillmore County following a complaint. Animals were found suffering from untreated wounds, severe emaciation and other issues. Several carcasses were also found on the property.

Streff says multiple agencies came together for the rescue operation.

"In addition to the severity of the case, this was one of the largest and more complex operations involving horses I've seen, requiring a major effort to remove and relocate the animals," Streff said.

As of Friday morning, four of the animals have been euthanized due to health complications. A dozen horses were taken to the University of Minnesota Large Animal Hospital in St. Paul for forensic examination.

The results of the exams will be reviewed by the county prosecutor to determine what, if any, criminal charges will be issued.

The Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation was recruited with other horse rescue organizations to treat, care for and place the animals not taken to the hospital.

They are currently being held and treated at the Fillmore County Fairgrounds in Preston.
