MINNETONKA, Minn. (WCCO) – Police are investigating a deadly crash Tuesday evening that authorities say involved a police squad car.

According to the State Patrol, the crash happened at the intersection of Excelsior Boulevard and Woodland Road in Minnetonka at about 9:30 p.m.

An officer was heading west on Excelsior with emergency lights and sirens activated.

The State Patrol says a BMW convertible was traveling northbound on Woodland Road and crossed the officer’s path at Excelsior. The squad car struck the BMW on the passenger side.

The driver of the convertible, 52-year-old Sean Kian, was not wearing a seat belt and was killed as a result of the crash.

The officer received non-life threatening injuries.

It is not yet known whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.
