Minn. Opera To Debut 'Doubt' On Jan .26

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Opera plans the world premiere of "Doubt" next month.

Composer Douglas J. Cuomo and librettist John Patrick Shanley created the opera based on Shanley's Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play.

The Roman Catholic drama focuses on a test of wills between a nun who suspects a priest of abusing a student at a Bronx school in the 1960s.

Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams starred in a film version adapted by Shanley from his play in 2008.

Grammy-winning soprano Christine Brewer makes her Minnesota Opera debut as the school principal. American baritone Matthew Worth sings the role of the priest, and mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves creates the role of the student's mother.

"Doubt" premieres at the Ordway in St. Paul on Jan. 26.
