Old Dutch High School Athlete of the Week: Alex Illikainen

OLD DUTCH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Alex Illikainen
Sport – Basketball
Class – Sophomore
High School – Grand Rapids

The 6-foot-9 sophomore team captain had a very strong opening week of the season as the Thunderhawks went 2-1 in their first three games. Illikainen had 30 points and 19 rebounds in a season-opening win over Cloquet; 39 points and 27 rebounds in an overtime loss to St. Cloud Cathedral; and 24 points and 10 boards in a win over East Grand Forks. He is on track to reach 1,000 career points this week and he is only a sophomore. Illikainen, who was named to the Class 3A all-tournament team at last year’s state tournament, has received scholarship offers from a long list of colleges, including Minnesota, Nebraska, Creighton, Iowa State, Northern Iowa, North Dakota State and Oregon.
