Man Killed In Garbage Truck Accident

CANNON FALLS TOWNSHIP, Minn. (WCCO) -- A 53-year-old Waste Management worker died when he was struck by a garbage truck Thursday morning, according to the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office says the incident happened when a garbage truck stopped to make a pick up on 90th Avenue Way in Cannon Falls Township.

The driver had apparently put the truck in neutral and applied the air brakes before the driver and passenger got out of the vehicle. The driver went to the rear of the truck to pick up a can and the passenger went to the front of the truck to do the same. Then, the driver noticed the garbage truck had started rolling forward and his partner was struck before he could warn him.

The victim was transported to the Cannon Falls Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Minnesota State Patrol will be reconstructing the accident and performing a commercial vehicle inspection.
