One of my favorite places to visit this time of year is the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, because it’s the time of year when the Arboretum’s staff and volunteers put on the annual holiday extravaganza known as Making Spirits Bright.
This year’s display is large and merry, with giant statues made out of oats and seeds.
And many familiar holiday figures.
The centerpiece of the Great Hall is an enormous tree made out of poinsettia plants.

You can see how the tree was constructed via this time-lapse video.
The Arboretum Restaurant has been turned into a child’s fairyland, complete with a lollypop island.
The outdoor area has its share of lovely decorations as well.
Everything is on a grand scale, and fresh and cheering in appearance.
There are special events occurring this weekend, including a performance by the Minnesota Chorale on Dec. 22, pictures with Santa, a holiday story time and kids’ shop, and the annual holiday tea (call ahead for reservations).
It’s about the perfect place to go to get away from the craziness the holidays can bring.
What else is happening in our state? Be sure to check out the 10 p.m. Tuesday night WCCO newscasts, where you can learn more in the weekly segment, Finding Minnesota.
