BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (WCCO) – The cold weather sure has benefited that huge Ice Castle at Mall of America. It continues to grow, and now you can check it out for yourself.

Over the past week or so, we’ve shown you some great video of the ice castle coming together, across from Mall of America. It’s a spectacle that will be open through the end of February, or whenever it gets too warm. It’s more than just something to glance at as you’re driving by.

For the price of admission, they let you walk through. We’ve gotten a closer look at what it’s like inside.

Thanks to some water and cold temperatures, the ice castle is about 25 feet high now, it’s completely lit up and it has walkways for people to wander through. Brent Christentson, one of the creators of this ice castle, said it’s the biggest one he’s ever made.

He said they got off to a late start in making the ice castle because of a warm December, but they’ve caught up and things are going well. The ice is organically grown and Christenson said they’ll use about four million gallons of water to keep the structure up. He said they’ve used about two million gallons so far.

Christenson said spectators can expect to see vertical growth, archways that are continuing to form and tunnels that are taking shape. He said the structure changes with the weather and the amount of water they use and they want the tallest area to get up to 50 feet.
