ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) - It’s one of the most hardcore and craziest winter sports out there – Red Bull Crashed Ice.

It’s a steep, twisted, frozen 460-meter long course that came to St. Paul last year. Skaters had to make it down slippery hills, go over jumps and make sharp turns.

The popular event returns later this month, and more than 400 athletes tried out this weekend at Xcel Energy Center for a spot to compete.

Construction on the course starts this week in St. Paul. The event itself runs from Jan. 24 – 26.

In the video above, photojournalist Melissa Martz shows us what it takes to hit the Crashed Ice course!
