MANKATO, Minn. (WCCO) – A North Mankato man died after being arrested for passing out in a grocery store’s entryway.

According to the Mankato Department of Public Safety, authorities responded to a disturbance at the Hy-Vee grocery store at 410 South Riverfront Dr. at 4:40 a.m. on Jan. 1.

Police found 26-year-old Andrew Derek Layton passed out in the doorway. When authorities woke him up, Layton became combative.

He was transported to jail by ambulance, but stopped breathing and lost his pulse upon arrival. Layton started breathing again after resuscitation, and was then taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

Layton later died at the hospital on Jan. 5. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s office performed an autopsy, but the results are pending.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating Layton’s death.
