S.D. Janitor Claims American Flag Disrespected, Fired

FORT PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A Fort Pierre man says he was fired from his job as a school custodian after posting photos on Facebook showing a crumpled up American flag.

Local media report that Cesar Zakahi was fired Monday from his job at Stanley County School District after he posted photos over the weekend of a crumpled up American flag.

Zakahi says he noticed that when another custodian would take down the American and South Dakota flags from an outside pole, he would crumple them up and place them on a boiler.

When the other worker refused to change the way he handled the flag, Zakahi posted the photo online.

Superintendent Don Hotalling has confirmed Zakahi no longer works for the district. He says the dismissal has nothing to do with the photo.
