Boxer Suspended For Alleged Dive Against Fmr. Viking
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — An Iowa boxer has been suspended indefinitely in North Dakota after allegedly taking a dive while boxing a former Minnesota Vikings football player in West Fargo.
Combative Sports Commissioner Al Jaeger says a video review of the fight between Nicholas Capes and a much larger Ray Edwards clearly shows Capes was not hit before he dropped to the canvas. Officials are continuing to investigate.
Event promoter Cory Rapacz says Capes was a last-minute replacement for a couple of no-show boxers and didn't realize what he was getting into before he got into the ring with Edwards, a former Vikings defensive end. He says officials expected Capes to try but says the backlash against Capes is unfair.
A telephone listing for Capes in Cedar Falls, Iowa, could not immediately be found.
