MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A 28-year-old man died when he drove his SUV into the side of a train that was stopped and blocking an intersection near Kelsey, Minn., according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.
On Wednesday morning at 6 o’clock, St. Louis County deputies responded to a reported vehicle-train crash at the BNSF railroad crossing, located on Arkola Road near the intersection of Parssinen Road.
Authorities say a BNSF train was stopped with mechanical problems and was blocking the intersection. The railroad crossing was marked with a stop sign, but there were no flashing lights or a stop arm at the crossing. There were also areas of dense fog in the vicinity at the time.
A 1993 Ford Explorer, driven by a 28-year-old Adam John Sharp, of Kelsey, was traveling eastbound on Arkola when it drove into the side of the train.
First aid, including CPR, was performed by citizens at the scene and then by medical personnel, but Sharp was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was on the way to work when he collided with the train.
The incident remains under investigation.
