ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Department of Public Safety is using the anniversary of last year’s deadliest day on the roads to remind motorists to focus on driving and staying safe.

On this date last year, eight people were killed on Minnesota roads. That number includes four North Dakota State University students who crashed on Interstate 94 near Alexandria.

Preliminary crash reports show there were 384 traffic deaths last year, up from 368 in 2011.

Last year, there were only 136 fatality-free days on Minnesota roads.

DPS Office of Traffic Safety Director Donna Berger says motorists must take driving seriously and avoid preventable tragedies. She says most crashes are caused by driver error and can be prevented by buckling up, driving at safe speeds, paying attention and planning a sober ride.
